how i roll

the feeling when everything
goes in the direction you
only had wished for but hadn’t
yet planned
the winds flow behind you
the sail is unfurled
let go of the wheel
and the current takes over
you lessen the grip that your
brain wants to have and the
instinct of knowing is
wanting what you have
for the time is the now
and the future is then
set your mind in a motion
let the rolling begin.

Her Name is Kristi

the weather man said it was
going to be record temperatures
said is was a documented fact
tonight will be the coldest night
in the history of the state
i tried to shield her from the news
i knew if she knew what i knew
she wouldn't want to start up
for my coffee shop visit at 6:30 AM
the next morning. she would not want
to rev her engine for me
but would rather stay on the street
trying her best to gather some heat
from the lone street lamp above her head
i shielded her from the news
although she's much smarter than that
and protested violently when i turned the key
and all the coaxing i could muster
didn't sway her one bit

Where The Cold Goes

The cold seems to congregate
at the tips of my body,
my nose,
my fingers,
my toes
I brew a cup of coffee
not so much for the taste,
but to hold the cup in the palms
of my hands and rest my
fingertips along its curves
sometimes it helps to sip
but the warmth comes
in the holding.
